The suspect in a vehicle accident that killed 28-year-old Officer James Manor is 45-year-old Calvin Darling. Police say Darling was driving under the influence when he made a left hand turn in front of Officer Manor.
Darling has lived in Las Vegas more than 20 years and he worked at the Bellagio. His home is just four tenths of a mile away from the scene of the accident. Neighbors say Darling was a good neighbor who never caused any trouble.
Darling was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, facing charges of drinking and driving with a resulting death and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Jeana Gallagher has been Darling's next door neighbor on Sunnyview Court for the past three years. She says she never had any problems. "Quiet guy. They didn't have parties or anything, no," she said.
And neighbor Sarah Thomas agrees. She's never had any trouble with Darling. "It is the kind of neighborhood where people keep their garage doors open and the children play on their bikes on the street -- good people," she said.
Metro says Darling was headed westbound on Flamingo and did not slow down to take a left hand turn at Ravenwood. Officer Manor was headed the other direction -- eastbound on Flamingo. The two vehicles had a collision in the middle of the intersection, the officer then lost control of his squad car.
"This shows you how quickly tragedy can strike," said Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie.
Officer Manor was headed to a domestic violence call from a 14-year-old girl. The girl told dispatchers her father had beaten her and had left the home but was expected to return soon.
Calvin Darling was not connected to that call in any way before the accident.
A spokesman for MGM Mirage confirms Darling was an employee in the engineering department at the Bellagio. Metro says Darling has no prior offenses here in Clark County.
Searches of a national public records database also turned up no criminal convictions in other states.
