More Details Released in Deadly Police Officer Crash

Updated:

A steady parade of people have been making their way to a roadside memorial where Metro Police Officer James Manor was killed in the line of duty Thursday.

Some of the people stopping by the memorial never met Officer Manor, but others had stories to share.

"We were just devastated, devastated. My daughter broke down and cried," said Esther Norton.

She has visited the memorial three times with her teen daughter to replace wilted flowers. She says Manor spent three hours by their side at the hospital just a few weeks ago after their car was run off the road by a suspected drunk driver.

Ironically, Manor was also involved in a suspected DUI accident while responding to a call. Police say his patrol cruiser was hit by a pick up truck making a left turn in front of him. The driver of the truck, Calvin Darling, was not seriously injured and is now facing felony DUI charges.

Eyewitness News has obtained an Arrest Report from Metro Police showing that Darling told police he had three or four beers at a bar near Bally's Casino before heading home. He told officers he did see Officer Manor's patrol vehicle but thought he had enough time to turn in front of him. Instead he crashed into him on Flamingo near Tenaya, killing Manor.

"For him to die this way is senseless," Norton said.

Manor, who was 28-years-old, was about to complete his second year of service with Metro. He grew up in Las Vegas and graduated from Clark High School. He leaves behind a large family and a young child.
