LAS VEGAS - For many people, smart phones are a necessity.
"I use it every day," Michelle Collins said about her smart phone.
"(I use it) pretty much every time I'm breathing, all day, every day," said smart phone owner Terrance Clark.
Smart phone applications enable users to maximize the capabilities on their phones. "I just download a lot of free stuff, books, free messaging and things like that," said smart phone owner Helen Haskoor.
According to new research by smart phone security company Lookout, Inc., however, some of those free applications could be pulling sensitive data from phones and sending it to third parties.
"It's a little scary," Collins said.
"I don't really like it very much," added Haskoor. "It's not, not a good thing."
Local security groups say they are aware of the practice. "They are actually tracking what people are doing on their phones and sending that information to other third parties," said Las Vegas Med IT owner Leo Bletnitsky.
Security experts say browsing habits, passwords and even your contacts can be pulled without your knowledge. They want people to be aware of the dangers. "It's important to really need to think about what you are installing. It might be a cool application, but there is a reason it's free," Bletnitsky said.
Lookout, Inc. is one company that offers an application to help users protect themselves. The company's website says the application can keep your mobile device safe from viruses and hackers.
A little research also goes a long way. "I'll use stuff that has good reviews," Collins said. "I'll check the reviews on the apps before I actually download them."
"It's quick and easy and simple, but at the same time you're putting yourself at risk," Clark added. "It's just like jumping in the middle of the ocean, and you don't know if sharks are there or not."
Experts say another way to keep safe is by making sure you clean any unnecessary personal information off your phone and do it often.
