2010 Community Pride Initiatives

Earned Income Tax Credit - If you earned $49,000 or less in 2009, you can receive free tax preparation and may be eligible for an EITC refund of up to $5,657. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps low-income, working taxpayers get more money back when they file their federal income tax forms but most people are unaware of this tax credit. A tax credit reduces the amount of money owed and may result in a tax refund. Eligible taxpayers with children can ask their employers to include advance EITC payments in their paycheck. Taxpayers must file a federal income tax return in order to claim the EITC—even if their income is so low that they normally would not file a tax return. They can get money back even if they don't owe any taxes. The income guidelines are more generous for people who have dependent children, but very low-income singles and married couples without children may also benefit. Foster parents and working grandparents who are raising their grandchildren also qualify. Even parents of babies born on the last day of the tax year can qualify if one or both parents were employed during the year and meet income guidelines.

2010 Census – The U.S. Census occurs only once every 10 years, yet makes a dramatic impact on Nevada for years to come. Every man, woman, and child who participate equates to $917 each year for Nevada. Therefore, Nevada misses out on $9,170 over the ten years. The federal money received via the Census assists with bridges, roads, hospitals and other critical services to our state. For information on the Census, click here: http://twitter.com/NVcensus

Project Elevate - Project Elevate is a program designed to assist foster teenagers aging out of the system to smoothly transition to a productive adult in our society.  A five-day life skills camp includes money management, basic kitchen skills, personal hygiene, employment and education.

In addition, Channel 8 and the Community Pride Partners recognize individuals within the community positively impacting Las Vegas and Southern Nevada through the two recognition programs:
