Olympia Dukakis and Husband are Dealing with Diabetes

Celebrities come through Las Vegas all the time.. But not all of them are "Dealing with Diabetes."

Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis and her husband, actor Louis Zorich, spoke at the 2009 A.A.R.P. convention in Las Vegas.

       Zorich was shocked to find out recently that he has diabetes> Despite a strong family historym he said he never expected it. Diabetes, though, has a strong genetic component, and it does run in families. Now, Zorich is taking it seriously.  He exercises and eats health foods.  "Now look at me. I'm 80-some years old and I'm still working, and still dealing with diabetes!" Zoriuch and Dukakis, who've been married since 1962, got a chuckle out of using our Channel 8 News Now slogan!  

They urged the A.A.R.P. audience to get screened and get healthy, so they can enjoy the good things in life, longer. Olympia Dukakis said, "If there's something you wanna do that you really love or some kind of activity or involvement in the community.. If you really want primetime with your grandchildren.. and with your children.. You really will get that if you pay attention to what's happening; stay alert and do something about it." Zorich chimed in, "It's your duty.. It's your duty to get screening!"

And if you're over 65, Medicare will screen you for free if you have risk factors for diabetes.
