The Stripper Mobile Draws Controversy on Las Vegas Blvd.

Posted: Updated:

You've probably spotted a moving billboard truck on the Las Vegas Strip a time or two. But one local gentlemen's club is taking their advertising campaign to a whole new level -- and some believe it may be over the top.

The Deja Vu nightclub now has some of their dancers in a special truck equipped with a pole and see thru windows and it's driving up and down Las Vegas Boulevard nightly.

The nightclub says it's just another way to attract more customers. They also say so far it's paid off because business is booming. But some aren't so sure about the idea and say it's a bit over the top, even for Las Vegas.

“It's about the bottom line and putting customers in the club,” said Larry Beard with Deja Vu. “We are in a recession, so every little bit of business helps.”

Every night, the Stripper Mobile, as the club calls it, rolls out and onto the Strip. Inside the modified U-Haul are plexiglass windows, several exotic dancers, a pole and a whole lot of dancing. “We thought it was a good idea, but the response has been overwhelming compared to what we thought it would be,” said Beard.

“What an awesome idea. I wish I would have thought of it. Marketing at it's best,” said Deja Vu dancer Kay.

And the reaction of people on the Strip varied. “They look a little to young, but I think it's normal for Vegas,” said tourist Nicole Mazzuca.

“I think it's terrible. There is enough sin around here,” said tourist Tauline Davis.

“You know, if you don't like it, look away or something,” said Las Vegas resident Travis Seelow.

The Stripper Mobile gets anything from lots of picture taking, to a simple thumbs up and the occasional sit and stare. “This is my first time in Vegas. I mean, nothing really surprises me from what I've seen here. So, not much of a shock,” said tourist Marc Dibattista.

But County Commissioner Steve Sisolak worries about the dangers the Stripper Mobile may pose. “It's obvious it’s a distraction to drivers. That's the intent, to make it a distraction,” he said.

Commissioner Sisolak says the county is looking into the matter along with the sheriff and the DA's office. “The driver looks over at it and goes up the sidewalk and plows down 12 people, we are going to have a real problem,” he said.

They're trying to find out if legally this type of advertising is even allowed or if they can get it stopped all together. “I'd like the operation to cease or at least put it into a more appropriate location,” he said.

Something Deja Vu isn't so sure about. They say in this economy, they'd rather keep rolling. “We compete with everyone out here on the Strip for that tourist dollar, so to see the seats packed is awesome,” said Beard.

The nightclub says to be mindful of families on the Strip they only have the truck out between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

County commissioners plan to address the matter during their next meeting on Tuesday.
