Metro Police Offer Tips to Homeowners at Seminar in Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is offering struggling homeowners tips to avoid foreclosure. Metro Police held a seminar on Saturday aimed at keeping people in their homes.

Metro Police Lt. Jack Owen says having the latest information about federal programs and requirements can be challenging. "The information has changed so rapidly, that it's good to be able to just find out what information is out there," he said.

Homeowner Heathen Peshek says that is one reason he attended the seminar. "There are a lot of things out there to help and a whole bunch of information on where to go and (whom) to talk to," Peshek said. Peshek is going through the foreclosure process. He says the information he obtained at the seminar will help him fight what he calls "strong arm" tactics by his bank. He also believes the information will help him save his home.

"There (are) like six different options (for me) even before the foreclosure. That's comforting to know," he said. "I think if everybody came here, they would say, ‘OK, that makes sense.' Let's not be so scared and think that the world's crashing down on us."

Las Vegas led the nation in foreclosures in 2009. Nearly one in every eight homes is in some stage of foreclosure. Metro Police say they may hold more seminars in the coming weeks.
