LAS VEGAS -- In a statement issued today, Republican Nevada State Senator Bill Raggio has announced he is retiring. Raggio says his resignation will be effective on January 15.

Raggio thanked his constituents saying, "To the citizens of Washoe County, I extend my sincere gratitude for your support for so many years."

Raggio is the longest serving state senator in Nevada history and is the former Senate minority leader. He says the timing of his resignation will allow the Board of County Commissioners to appoint his successor before the 2011 legislative session.

The 84-year-old legislator cited his health as a reason for retiring. "I had hoped to complete the remainder of my 10th elected term, but my physical mobility simply does not allow me to function fully, and therefore it is time for me to step aside for someone who can give the position a 100 percent effort."

He says he plans to remain involved in decisions that affect Nevada.

In a statement, Nevada Senator Harry Reid said, "Respected by both Democrats and Republicans alike, Senator Raggio has always been a fierce advocate for Nevada and his constituents throughout his long career in the Nevada State Senate. I thank him for the support he offered me over years and for his work on behalf of our state. Bill is a true statesman and his voice will be sorely missed."
