LAS VEGAS -- Nevada is ground zero for home foreclosures. However, the Obama Administration and a group called Hope Now are in Las Vegas to give homeowners on the verge of foreclosure some options on what to do next.
An event called Help for Homeowners may have helped hundreds of residents to not only keep their homes, but put their worries to rest.
Evelyn Magers came prepared to the event. She brought contracts, credit reports and paychecks. It is paperwork she hopes will help her keep her from losing her home, up for auction next month.
She is among hundreds of other homeowners facing foreclosure. The event is a chance for homeowners like Evelyn to meet face to face with their mortgage lenders and HUD counselors, like Nancy Wilson.
"Success isn't measured on how many people stay in their homes. Success is measured by the best option for that particular client," she said.
While she can't solve all their problems, Wilson says her job is to give the best advice. Sometimes, the best advice is to not always keep the home or go through loan modifications.
"It's not necessarily modification for every home. It's whatever the best situation is for each client. If it's a deed in lieu of foreclosure, it's a shortsale, if it's a modification," she said.
Magers met mortgage lenders who told her her paperwork is going through. "At first, I was scared. But I feel better," she said.
While she's still not sure she'll be able to keep her home, those words of encouragement may exactly what needed to hear.
The Help for Homeowners event is held once a year in Las Vegas. It's still going until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hilton. The event is free.
