LAS VEGAS -- Over the past few years, the prices of homes took a nose dive in Nevada. In Clark County, thousands of people are appealing their latest property tax assessments. Those hearings took place Friday at the Clark County Government Center.
The assessors office received a record 9,400 appeals regarding property tax assessments. Homeowners appealing those assessments piled into commission chambers, pleading with the Board of Equalization to drop the tax prices on their homes.
Jay Borman says his home is nowhere near what the assessment office says it's worth. He says the assessor's office is pricing his home too high, which is why he is appealing it.
"It went up to $383,000, and I would have liked to bring it down to what it was last year," he said.
Borman claims his home is now worth $315,000, a victim of the economic times, just like everyone else who turned out.
"It is a record number of appeals. Last year, we had 8,300, which was a record at the time. We've exceeded that by 1,200 or 1,300," said Rocky Steele with the assessor's office.
The six member Board of Equalization listened to every case. They either approved the homeowner's asking price or came up with one of their own.
Borman didn't get the $315,000 he was asking for on his house, but got a decrease of about $50,000. He is satisfied with the number the board came up with.
Homeowners who did not appeal the final price on their homes placed by the board will not have to go through further review. The agreed value on their home will be processed and sent to the treasurer.
