The Epsilon security breach, first reported March 31, involves the theft of e-mail addresses and consumer names of more than a dozen of its more than 2,000 clients. Epsilon is responsible for much of today's direct marketing campaigns.

On the surface, the theft of the e-mail address is not an immediate risk. However, what it does mean is that the people who have obtained this information can now more readily send out bogus e-mail messages that look like the real thing. If a consumer isn't aware of the risks, they could find themselves victim of identity theft in a phishing scheme.
For example, now that these people have your information for JP Morgan Chase, an e-mail can be crafted and sent your way to obtain your log-in or account information. If you provide it, you could see unwelcome charges on your credit card bill or have your identity stolen.
So, here's what you can do:
Knowing about the breach is half the battle.
If you receive an e-mail message from a company informing you that your e-mail and name have been compromised, be cautioned to respond to any forthcoming e-mails that appear to be a scam.
Companies, banks and retailers, will not ask you for your credit card information or login information through an e-mail.
If you are suspicious of an e-mail, contact the Customer Service department of the company in question. Ask if the e-mail was sent and if it is safe to respond.
You can also unsubscribe from rewards memberships and e-mail services and re-subscribe using a different e-mail address. Many people set up separate e-mail accounts just for this kind of activity.
If there's a link in a questionable e-mail, do not click it.
