LAS VEGAS -- Nevada has a new U.S. senator with the swearing-in of Republican Congressman Dean Heller today.

Heller was sworn in Monday afternoon in Washington, after being named by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval to the unexpired term left when the embattled John Ensign stepped down. The 50-year-old Heller is a former Nevada state assemblyman and secretary of state.

His appointment to the Senate has sparked a scramble for candidates for a September special election to fill his seat in a vast rural and northern Nevada congressional district.

Ensign was facing a Senate ethics probe of an extramarital affair and allegations he helped a former aide find lobbying work.
