World Series Players Mix Hobbies Between Hands

LAS VEGAS - It used to be poker players just needed a chip, a chair, and maybe a sweet pair of shades. At the 2011 World Series of Poker, technology has taken over the table.

"A plumber would bring his wrench and his socket," said World Series of Poker spokesman Seth Palansky. "These guys bring iPhones, iPads and headphones."

In between hands, players text, tweet, read, and even watch.

"I've watched movies, but I think the craziest thing I've done is play ‘Fruit Ninja,' said professional poker player Sorel Mizzi.

The activities may counteract boredom, but they also have a downside. "It's probably not a good thing, because I should be focused on playing poker," Mizzi said.

"I love the guy that starts flirting with the waitress, or reads a book, or goes on his iPad and starts laughing about some note somebody sent him," said professional poker player Dennis Phillips. "Those are the guys you can take advantage of."

Phillips takes it a step further. He uses his iPad to research other players at his table.

"I'll Google them," he said. "Why not? You know, any advantage I can get. They know me. It's only fair play."
