LAS VEGAS - The pain at the pump still hurts, but not as much. As of Friday, the national average for a gallon of gas was $3.55. That's 24 cents cheaper than Memorial Day weekend. Las Vegas drivers are paying, on average, $3.50 per gallon.
Driver Tiasha Moore noticed the lower prices as she filled her tank at the Valero station on Charleston Boulevard and Jones Boulevard.
"I have to put a lot of gas in my car. I spend at least $80 a week, because I travel so far, and my car just eats it, eats it up," she said. "They're going down. It's better. It's better than $3.60, $3.70, $3.80. It's dropping. I like it."
Gas prices traditionally rise in the summer, but this year, drivers are experiencing a Fourth of July discount. That discount is not, however, leading to an increase in holiday travel.
AAA says Fourth of July travel is expected to be about two percent lower than last year. One reason is that gas prices are up 64 cents per gallon from a year ago.
Driver Billy Graham last year traveled to California after the Fourth of July. He says he's staying in town this year.
"Not especially because of gas, but I guess that does have something to do with it too," he said.
He says he wants prices at the pump to plummet further. "I am looking forward to it going down a little bit more, and I hope the Libyan crisis or whatever is holding the oil shipments up, it gets back over here pretty quick," he said.
The average price for a gallon of gas in Las Vegas peaked this year May 5 but didn't reach $4.28 a gallon like it did three years ago.
