LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Voters are trying to recall a rural Nevada elected official who sent emails blasting Hispanic workers. Nye County Clerk Sam Merlino says three voters have launched an effort to unseat county Assessor Shirley Matson.
Matson was reprimanded in March by the Nye County Commission after she allegedly used a county computer network to accuse Hispanic workers of being illegal immigrants and call Mexicans "filthy." The commission's symbolic resolution carried no penalty.
Organizers need to collect more than 3,600 signatures by Oct. 4 to force a recall election. If a majority of voters opt to recall Matson, the commission would need to appoint a temporary successor.
Matson told The Associated Press she had no comment during a telephone interview Tuesday and then hung up.
She won a four-year term in November.
