LAS VEGAS -- A major soft drink company set out to discover how honest people are on the Las Vegas Strip.
Coca-Cola placed a unsupervised sidewalk stand with cold drinks and a sign that read $1. The experiment was based on the honor system to see how many people would actually pay.
As it turned out, most of the people were honest and left the money. "I didn't think twice about it. I wouldn't have been able to drink it if I hadn't paid for it," said Claire Heartland, visiting from Atlanta
The experiment has been done in more than 20 cities nationwide in the last two years. It started after two Honest Tea employees left a cooler of iced products with a note promising to return.
"They ended up writing a note and said 'be back in 15 minutes' and then they left and secretly recorded it. Basically the barrel was emptied out within 15 minutes and we thought maybe we have something here," said Krystle Shaw, Southwest regional marketing manager.
Shaw says they hope to prove that more people are honest than not. On Thursday, they had an honest campus experiment at UNLV and found 84 percent of students were truthful about paying for their drink.
