LAS VEGAS - Some boxers are taking part in a unique study. The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is teaming with the Nevada Athletic Commission and Las Vegas promoters to find out more about the effect of boxing on the brain.
Professional fighters were studied in real time. They received state-of-the art MRIs, memory and cognitive tests, speech analysis and much more. Researchers want to see if subtle changes in the brain can be detected over time.
"We know that repetitive head trauma is not good for the brain. What we don't know is actually how it develops - how one goes from having blows to the head to having long-term, crippling diseases for the brain," said Cleveland Clinic Associate Director Charles Bernick. "So, our job is really to find that out and detect when these changes are occurring, how early they are detected and follow them and predict who is going to develop them."
"This is a sport where (your) next fight can be your last fight, and you don't want it to be like that," said retired boxer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. "The brain is not meant to be moving around or punched."
Researchers say results from this study can also be applied to other sports and may help determine when athletes can safely return to play after a blow to the head.
