PHOENIX -- The Federal Highway Administration rejected Arizona's effort to charge a toll for driving along interstate 15 through the Arizona Strip.

Arizona transportation officials had wanted to be part of the federal toll road pilot program. Under the program, tolls would be allowed on existing roads. The highway administration instead approved tolls for roads in Virginia, North Carolina and Missouri.

ADOT had wanted to charge the toll to pay for $250 million in upgrades for bridges and roads in the Virgin Rive Gorge. Officials in Nevada, Utah and Arizona have agreed that improvements on the stretch of road are needed.
