LAS VEGAS -- Fatal traffic accidents in Clark County are up 140 percent from this time last year. Law enforcement officials say many of those crashes could have been avoided.
It's not hard for Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson to spot those breaking the law. "This guy, right here, was obviously walking on the road," said Trooper Hixson as he points out a jaywalker on Las Vegas Boulevard. The pedestrian's avoidance of a crosswalk is a potential recipe for disaster.
A few miles away on I-215, Hixson turns his attention to drivers. He says common factors in the recent rash of deadly accidents includes aggressive and careless behavior behind the wheel.
"These are families lives that are completely changed when it's something that is preventable," Hixson said.
It doesn't take long for Trooper Hixson to make his point as he pulls over a driver for talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device. The driver is also not wearing a seatbelt. Hixson says those are two simple tasks that can lead to a deadly outcome.
"It's a snowball effect," he said.
Nearly 30 people have been killed in crashes in Clark County since the beginning of the year. Law enforcement is urging drivers and pedestrians to be less impatient and more safety conscious.
