Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss, and a new study says it's also a warning sign of heart failure.
The study followed 1,000 people with type-2 diabetes for nine years. Those with retinopathy were found to have a higher risk of heart failure.
Las Vegas Ophthalmologist, Dr. Russell Jayne says that diabetic retinopathy, which often presents with bleeding in the eye, is notorious for being an indicator that another organ is in trouble.
"I would not be surprised at all when we see the diabetic retinopathy, for that same process to be occurring in the heart. And when that occurs in the heart, the function of that organ is compromised," he said.
Dr. Jayne says it's important for diabetics to have their eyes examined on a regular basis and to make sure their primary care physician is made aware of any unusual findings.
